Trawsnewid Bangor Transition

Steering Group Meeting 10/11/09

Steering Group members met on Tuesday 10/11/09 at 5.30pm at the Greenhouse

Present:- Thomas, Nick, Trish, Sheena, Jon

Apologies:- Angharad

1. Trish gave Thomas the Welsh translation of her Transition document. Thomas will ask Mentor Mon for an electronic copy and load it onto the TBT Website.

The 10:10 campaign was discussed and the group weren't sure how they could measure a carbon reduction of 10% by Dec 2010. Sheena thought TBT should be looking at its activities as a group and see if they could reduce carbon emissions. It would be difficult to measure this. The other option was for each member of the group to reduce their own carbon emissions. Trish said that it was harder for group members to reduce emissions when the suggested actions had been already taken e.g. using low energy light bulbs, installing adequate insulation, reducing the thermostat, fly less …. Trish had made a large reduction in her emissions by not driving. Jon has found that the carbon calculators available can be too simplistic or else difficult to complete.

Action: each member to try to use an individual carbon calculator before the next meeting.

2. The proposal that Franklin circulated about TBT becoming a group within the Greenhouse was discussed. The pros and cons were considered and several questions needed to be answered e.g. What would happen to any grants obtained if the Greenhouse thought that TBT were not making effective use of the money? How would things be organised if TBT became a group of the Greenhouse? What possible grants were likely to be available?

Action: Jon to email Franklin with the list of questions.

3. People and Planet want to start a Transition project at the University and would like to come to the Steering group meetings. Jon has asked them to the next meeting.

4. Jon asked if Bangor had ever had a LETTS scheme. There has been a scheme in the area in the past but it did not really take off because there wasn't the correct mix of skills to swap. Jon is going to investigate whether it would be possible to have a speaker to give a talk on LETTS when they are up in Bangor at no cost to TBT.

5. Sheena mentioned she was going to attend training as an Environmental Rep as part of Unison. Cynnal Cymru has produced a collection of essays called Defining a Sustainable Economic Future for Wales that is very interesting. She will add a link to the minutes.

6. Trish is going to start a campaign to provide facilities for re-using bottles rather than re-cycling them. She feels this is more sustainable. Thomas said that Dimensions in Upper Bangor provided a facility to re-fill Ecover bottles.

7. Franklin has circulated some events. If anyone can go to the Wales Transition network meeting on Saturday 21st in Blaenau it would be useful. There is a coach going down to London for the Wave event on 5th December. You need to be an insomniac to catch it in time in the morning!

Next Meeting:- Tuesday 24th November 5.30pm at the Greenhouse.

Trawsnewid Bangor Transition Steering Group Meeting Tues 27th October 2009 at Greenhouse Present Thomas, Nick, Trish, Angharad, Franklin, Jon • Grants through Greenhouse • Minutes from last meeting follow up • Website maintenance • Social Event • 10/10 • Other business • Grants and other support offered by Greenhouse Greenhouse has capacity to support TBT through: - a physical base (space to meet, and facilities) - a ‘support’ base (access to grants through Greenhouse’s administrative & financial capacity, and status as a company limited by guarantee) Supporting the activities of TBT will, in turn, help Greenhouse to establish charitable status (- which would then open up more grants, etc). Franklin invites TBT to consider whether to accept this support. The interim consensus is that in principle we are happy to accept. TBT needs support while establishing itself as a solid group (with fully-fledged sub-groups)… …however, we do need to be careful to leave the future open. Action Point: We need to consider: - the implications (both positive and negative) of applying for grants – and of not applying - if any, what kind of grants would be applied for (i.e. how much money? For what kinds of activities? With what level of commitment?) - This could affect the group’s activities significantly. Would it be appropriate to ask the wider members of TBT? Action Point: Franklin to bring next meeting - something in writing describing such an agreement between TBT and GH - details of grants available, for an informed discussion on the subject. • Website maintenance Action Point: Thomas, Nick, Jon and Angharad to meet at 4pm on Thursday 5th November at Greenhouse, to go through maintenance. • Social event Treborth doesn’t seem big enough to comfortably accommodate our event – consensus was that Hendre would be more appropriate after all. It was decided to defer the event until after Christmas, to allow more time to organise this (and to contact the local groups we wish to invite, in order to check the level of interest, how much notice people would prefer, etc.). Action Point: Franklin to find out Hendre’s availability in the New Year, and to arrange a date for the event, if possible. Action Point: Nick to revise the previous invitation to be more of a ‘communication’ (without dates & details) – to be used to send word out & gage reaction • 10:10 Action Point (carried forward): Some thought needs to be given to how we are going to measure this. • Other business… Trish has written a summary of the Transition Handbook, with particular focus on issues of relevance to Anglesey. She has actively disseminated this and talked about it with local groups (the Womens’ Institute, the Mothers’ Union, Llangefni Allotments Association…). There have been positive reactions and genuine concern. This kind of work is extremely valuable in forging links between local groups - and between Bangor and the wider rural communities. Action Point: Thomas to scan the summary, and convert to text (or Trish to find the memory-stick!) – we will then post this on the website. • Date of next meeting Tuesday, 10th November 5:30-7:30

1.Welcome to the steering group, Angharad Owen and Martin Daws.

available so alternative venues were discussed. Thomas, Lisa and Martin were
going to investigate possible use of schools, Curved Lounge and Empty shops.
The social would now be planned for November - 7th November first favourite. A
'meet in the street' type of event would be later on or after Xmas.

3.Martin is going to help Jon with the freshers societies events where TBT can
be promoted.

4.Green mapping - Nick to send out letter seeking information about possible

6.The information about the allotments scheme for a field behind Penrhosgarnedd

it is set up and how to add information. DB has now mostly been paid for the

8.Sheena talked about the 10:10 launch and felt that it would be good if TBT

would be a way to get individuals involved. It was agreed that TBT should sign
up as a group - action SR.

Please help by sending us your comments on the site, weblinks or pieces of writting by yourself on the subjects of Peak Oil etc would be great.

Also, the fora are now open to anyone upon registration and approval (stops spam) so I hope to create a space where people can discuss things and share info freely here on the site.
